Jefferson, a man with an unfair conviction has a meaningful purpose in the novel, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. He was a young black man who lived in Louisiana, who spent most of his days on the planation. He struggled on a daily basis to obtain basic necessities. His low income made it hard for him to live a decent lifestyle. It was impossible to be proven innocent after being accused of murder, ultimately because he lived in a segregated community. In the 1940’s, white individuals were seen with a superior image. The black society was looked down upon and never had the respect a human should receive. Thus, one can inspect Jefferson’s character and identify the symbolic significance he has in this novel, to signify positive change.

Ernest J. Gaines starts his literature with a direct illustration, explaining Jefferson’s incident in the store that quickly caused him to be sitting in a court room chair. In a racist community Jefferson was not given the opportunity to be proven innocent with evidence. His defense filtered him with insulting statements. “Do you see anyone here who could plan a murder, a robbery, can plan-can plan- can plan anything? A cornered animal to strike out of fear, a trait inherited from his ancestors in the deepest jungle of blackest Africa- yes, yes, that he can do- but to plan?”(Gaines7). Thus, he is questioning and downgrading his capability of even having the significant amount of intelligence to plan a crime. One can conclude that black individuals in this era were treated like worthless humans. “What justice would there be to take this life? Justice, gentlemen? Why, I would just as soon put a hog in this electric chair as this” (Gaines 8). Beyond doubt, countless whites have the certainty that blacks are beasts. Creatures who do not deserve any sort of sympathy. For this reason, Jefferson’s character is shaped with despair, ignorance, shame, and completely goes along with being called a hog.

After he is convicted with murder and sentenced to death, he walks into that cell acting exactly like a hog. When critically analyzing Jefferson’s behavior in the beginning of the novel, it is crucial that one looks beyond the surface. Living in a society that enforced blacks and whites to live in separate neighborhoods caused a man like Jefferson to realize that there is no hope. His strive to fight for his innocence was never apparent. He simply went along with what white individuals saw him as, a hog. The trial is just the start of the many obstacles that he faces.

In continuation with the novel, a man of the name Grant Wiggins is forced to help Jefferson. Grant is a black man with an educational background that teaches in an elementary school. He is lured into helping him die with dignity. Although he doesn’t think he is capable of helping a man of his state of mind, he still agrees to help him die like a true man. As mentioned, Jefferson feels powerless in a society that is dominated with white individuals which causes him to accept being sentenced to die in the electric chair. Thus, Grant is discouraged and doesn’t feel capable of helping him when recognizing that Jefferson cannot face his own life. But Jefferson’s perspective on life is understandable. Racism destroys individuals completely. It is hard to prevail in a society filled with negativity towards the black community.

Jefferson spent his days in the cell acting like the creature they accused of being, a hog. For instance, Grant took him a bag of food on one of his visits and Jefferson definitely did not act like himself. “He knelt down on the floor and put his head inside the bag and started eating, without using his hand. He even sounded like a hog.”(Gaines 83). In other words, Jefferson had completely lost meaning to life. His lawyer downgraded his humanity and it caused him to lose sight of the individual he once was. This demonstrates how racism can destroy an individual. Although as the reader, one may be confused of why Jefferson chooses to go along with being called a hog. Because it would be more common for a man to stand up for himself and defend the man he was destined be. But realistically, when living in a society with absolutely no remorse to treat an individual with dark complexions in an unfair manner, it won’t be long until the person starts believing what they are being told.

Reflecting back into the time frame, Louisiana was dealing with many changes in the 1940’s. For instance, segregation in schools was one of many issues society dealt with. Although slavery had already ended, racism still took over Louisiana. Thus Jefferson was exposed in a time period where there wasn’t any sight of change. For instance, “Pronounced racial bias in teacher pay and woefully inadequate schools for black children reinforced the deeply rooted black poverty in the state” (Brown1). This evidence indicates an example of the concerns that the black community dealt with. It is safe to assume that white individuals believe they are superior to other races, specifically blacks. In addition, justice did not exist in a court room in Louisiana. “The point with both the death penalty and torture is not whether there are people who deserve to be tortured or put to death, but whether the society is willing to engage in such practices” (Bright370). In other words, if an individual deserves to be punished the society would either way have an influence on the decision of a judge. Clearly, the humanity had a major impact on Jefferson’s case, making him lose self-worth.

Being convicted for a crime that he did not commit destroyed his every hope to fight for his life. “Jefferson in front, shackled, walking with short steps, his head bowed, and his shoulders stooped” (Gaines137). As has been noted, his body language is a clear factor of how he felt. To further explain, “The mind has the ability to produce chemical changes in the body and alter the state of our body” (MindHacks1). Thus, through Jefferson’s movements it was clear what he was going through. All the judgments people were portraying to him began to affect his ability to think positively. He was held captive not only physically but emotionally as well.

As Jefferson continues living in the cell, his date of execution is set. With only a little over a month of existence he is still an emotional wreck. Helping him turn into a dignified man continues to be applied by Grant. Surprisingly, Jefferson seems to have made some progress. “I want me a whole gallon of ice cream” (Gaines170). Announcing his desire for a gallon of ice cream, shows a human characteristic that he hadn’t been showing since they had held him captive. He explained to Grant that he was never able to obtain more than a nickel cone of ice cream. Thus, the fact that he is asking for a whole gallon, signifies that he feels worthy. Grant tells Jefferson, “To them you are nothing but another nigger- no dignity, no heart, no love for your people. You can prove them wrong” (Gaines192). At this very moment, Jefferson has a deep impact of the words that Grant is saying. Uncovering meaning to the words that were being said, he began to cry. Perhaps he realized that things often occur for a reason. Despite the unfair justice he is a symbol of change.

To differentiate, further into the novel Jefferson begins to comprehend what Grant is trying to expose. Soon after, the tables turn and Jefferson is the one inspiring Grant. His perspective and evaluation on life impacted Grants life as well.

During the course of his days that he spent in the cell, Grant had given him a notebook and a pencil. And quickly it became his diary. Writing his daily thoughts helped him figure out what life is about, the significance of being a black individual in white dominated society. He realizes that although half of the community sees him as a black murderer, he is still has the assets of a respectable human being. His diary states, “I cry cause you been so good to me mr wiggin an nobody aint never been that good to me an make me think im sombody” (Gaines232). Remarkably after living his whole life in society that downgraded him, it had to take an unjust conviction to make him realize that he isn’t just a thing walking around, he is an actual human being with the ability to obtain dignity. He recognized he became an important individual in his community. Jefferson became a strong man who held no grudge towards the individuals who prosecuted him. His last words in his diary stated, “good by mr wigin tell them im strong tell them im a man a man good by mr wigin” (Gaines 234). These words are significant because one can uncover his redemption in death. He found purpose in his life, which was to give his community a purpose to keep moving forward. Despite all the negative accusations towards black citizens, he was determined to die like a man and show the superior individuals that their thoughts of him did not matter. His final day on earth came, and he was stronger than any of the men around him.

All in all, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines, clearly elaborates the difficult times an African American faced in the 1940’s. Jefferson is an influential character in this novel. He represents the struggle African Americans dealt with every day. Although he lapsed into an individual with absolutely no self-respect, he soon recognized that he had to transform his attitude. Before his death he knew he wanted to be a powerful symbol for his heritage. Jefferson transformed into an honorable man. In simpler terms, Jefferson dies as a worthy person that signifies braveness. This novel would not have the same impact if it were not for his existence and transformation.

Understanding Poverty

Imagine all individuals in America living in peace and harmony, Adults and children going to sleep in a warm cozy bed, and looking forward to each day as they wake up. With a job and a home, every family would have the fundamental requirement to a decent lifestyle.

Unfortunately, about half of the population in America is living in poverty. The basic needs to survive have been destroyed. But how is that so? You may ask yourself. America is known as the ideal state to live in because of the opportunities. Correct? No matter what educational background you may have, one still has the chance to obtain a job. Humans are capable of solving problems, yet one out of two people are living in poverty today. This unfortunate epidemic has grown drastically over the years and it is changing and impacting civilians in a psychological and sociological way.

How can someone become poor? This is a question that has numerous answers. There is always a unique circumstance that puts an individual in poverty. For instance, one may say that drugs are a leading cause. An addiction to a substance can lead individuals to act in an unethical manner. The infatuation towards drugs becomes the main focus for an addict that all their responsibilities no longer exist. And soon, they have nothing to survive on but drugs. As the PBS video, “Remaking America” states, “Something bad with one’s character”. Others are born into poverty. They do not fall into bad choices; they simply were brought up in that atmosphere. Violence and abuse may also be a reason for one to fall into poverty.

Currently, the recession in the United States has been the main cause for poverty.  Individuals across the country have lost their jobs. Citizens were not prepared for an overnight notification. The accumulation of the personal savings that citizens collected was not enough to continue with the same life style as they were used to.  As the prices kept increasing, people didn’t have the significant amount of money to continue to buy their needs. Soon enough, affording groceries was one of the least of the issues. Paying the utility bills became nearly impossible. Homeowners quickly lapsed into an economic stress, which led to an unwanted outcome. Reality took action, and families started losing their homes. A total of 2,871,891 homes were foreclosed in the United States (Realty Trac Staff).  In California alone, “546,669 homes received a foreclosure” (Realty Trac Staff). These statistics show how many people’s life changed with the recession. Bank repossessions led families to become homeless.

As a result of families losing their homes, there comes an occasion when they often get separated for multiple reasons. Envision the sensation one would experience knowing that you are without a home. Everything that you called your own is completely vanished. That warn cozy bed you slept in, will no longer be the bed you slumber in. Finding help within ones family is the first option. There are times when the children are able to stay with a family member, while each parent gets help somewhere else. But when one doesn’t have anywhere to go, they do not have another choice but to go to a homeless shelter to find help.  An organization can provide one with basic needs, for instance a place to sleep and food. The transition one may have to adapt to is awful. Living in a home filled with basic needs to survive is something people do not think about losing. As one reaches help, there are standards that each facility enforces. For instance, “families have access to their room from 5:00p.m. in the evening to 8:30a.m. the next morning” (Schultz-krohn). This example demonstrates that although there are places that offer shelter in those in need, one needs to follow the rules. In addition to shelter’s standards, “Families are not allowed to remain in the shelter during the day but are expected to be seeking housing, employment, or attending job-training programs” (Schultz-Krohn). Therefore, it is important to seek a solution. Finding another job is important to rebuild their life. Beyond to what a facility has to offer, there are other things to recognize.

American residents are being affected every day because of poverty. If one looks up the word poverty, this is how it is defined, “the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor” (Dictionary). Of course, it is simple to look it up at get an idea of what the word itself means, but it’s not just a definition that one can look up. For Instance, living in the Los Angeles area, one is capable of attaching a detailed picture to this definition in their mind.

In the paths of LA, one can usually find a homeless individual walking or simply standing in a spot while asking for money. Usually they’ll be holding up a sign, waiting to receive some help. Their appearance usually consists with, matted hair, dull skin, and worn out clothes. When walking by an individual with these characteristics, it is often that an unpleasant odor will be passed through the wind. There are times when the individual may simply have no energy to ask for help. Quickly they isolate themselves from society, with the sensitivity that they do not belong with the rest of the individuals in the community. The situation they dealt with through their life will never be seen with the naked eye. One can only see what they have become. With this in mind, one may be more sympathetic. It is important to recognize that despite the situations they are currently in, they continue to be a human being.

As a matter of fact, their state of mind has most certainly been damaged. Hope is no longer a feeling when a homeless individual has continuously struggled to survive. The few possessions that they have, means a significant amount to them. They protect everything they have left, a destroyed blanket, sleeping bag, even a cardboard box that they use to rest on top of. It is important to differentiate their image and their story. To clarify, understanding the circumstance that an individual is facing while in poverty will help give the society enough dedication towards developing a solution.

Giving poor individuals an opportunity to get help is certainly a great action. However, decreasing the poor population is the only solution to this problematic condition. Each year the amount of homeless people increase. A CNN writer states, “nearly 36 million Americans lived in poverty in 2003” (Blanco1). 36 million is a significant large number, but today there is approximately 150 million Americans living in poverty (Remaking America). To formulate, in seven years the poverty population amplified significantly. If the United States would implement a solution to decrease this data, citizens would avoid the psychological and sociological crisis. Humans are capable of creating opportunities in order to live a stable life, so why is poverty a never ending issue?

Unexpected Journey

Life is often a mystery. It is nearly impossible to know what the future holds. People may live life in a careless way but it is often that an unexpected situation may turn your life around. It probably isn’t clear why things often occur, but life is about not knowing what is going to happen next.
Jeremiah Johnson is a handsome six foot tall black man. With incredible broad shoulders, structured face, smooth golden-brown skin, and squinty brown eyes that will make any woman melt in desire. His voice projects in a very deep but yet gentle tone. His appearance would lead people to believe that he is a man with no possible flaws and lives the perfect life.
June 9, 2005, Jeremiah Johnson sat on a chair next to his graduating class in Harvard Medical School. While waiting to walk into his future he couldn’t help but to look around and be awakened by his significant accomplishment. He also could not help but to notice, that the one person that influenced him immensely, was missing. Looking into the proud crowd, Jeremiah closed his eyes and reflected to his memories, which brought him back to his mother.
Merced, a single parent, raising a child without the help of a male figure, made sure Jeremiah had everything he needed. She always enforced education to be the main focus for Jeremiah. She worked two to three jobs a week to maintain a stable household and put him through private school. Unfortunately, he never realized the trouble his mom went through to give him the best life she possibly could. Growing up, he always questioned his mom as to why he didn’t have a dad. Merced never knew how to respond to her child’s question, which inevitably led Jeremiah to believe that his father left because of him. He thought he was at fault to his father’s leaving, the reassurance from his mother meant nothing. As a young child he didn’t have a masculine figure to look up to. Although his mom loved him unconditionally, he couldn’t help but to think about all the things he was missing out on without a dad. All he ever wanted was to have someone to go to the park with, play catch, and talk about guy issues. He was never able to relate to his classmates on Father’s Day when they described their dad as their hero.
As Jeremiah became a teenager, his group of friends at school became a major influence on him. Slowly, he started developing a rebellious attitude. He quickly started disputing with his mother constantly. The stormy age years became difficult for Merced to handle. Leaving Merced distraught, she couldn’t give up on her only child. He was exposed to drugs, parties, and girls. As Jeremiah reflects on his past, he wishes he would have never fallen into peer pressure.
With his curiosity raging, he finally accepts to try marijuana. Everyone was smoking it, so he thought it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try. Thing is, he enjoyed every last hit of it. It started becoming a daily habit. He loved feeling more in-depth. The whole world around him seemed to slow down, but even after a while weed became boring. Looking for more of a rush was the next step. After experimenting endlessly, he found the party scene. Eventually, he started to party and get drunk. Alcohol led him to the worst situation in his life. It was 4th of July weekend and he was invited to go with a group of friends to a local neighborhood party. He had asked his mom if he could go out but she refused to let him go. She was worried he was going to get into some sort of trouble after finding out of his marijuana and alcohol usage. He became really upset and another dispute arose. Furious he blurted out, “You should’ve been the one out of my life, not dad!” Not regretting any word he said he went storming into his room. He hated feeling misjudged and overly controlled. Merced didn’t know how to respond to his statement. She began to blame herself for his outrages actions. Tears ran down her face as these thoughts crossed her mind. Meanwhile, Jeremiah was infuriated and did not care of his mother’s disapproval. Regardless of her opinion he decided to sneak out of the house and go to the party.
Without any idea that Jeremiah left the house Merced continued to cry. His behavior was uncontrollable. She felt guilty because she started to believe that she was a bad parent. With blame by her side, she felt the need to speak to Jeremiah and tell him she was sorry for not being able to raise him the correct way. She knocks on his bedroom door, but no answer. She slowly opened the door; he was nowhere to be found. She couldn’t believe he went to that extreme. All she ever wanted was to nurture him and make sure he had everything he needed. At that point, she felt useless. She didn’t know whether she should just accept his rebelliousness or become extra strict and punish him for leaving the house. She knew that if she would confront him about his act, all it would do is push him away even further. And that was the last thing she wanted. As the hours went by Jeremiah had still not arrived. She became in an emotional distress. All she could think about was that he could have been hurt, that something had happened to him. She continued to wait for him; she didn’t want to go to bed until he arrived. Quickly, she became impatient and decided to go look for him. She started driving around, hoping that she would spot him. As she stopped on an intersection, she waited for the traffic light to turn green. Without any notice, a drunk driver staggered behind her and she was thrown forward violently. Her seat belt pressed into her chest and knocked the wind out of her. An immense destruction noise echoed in her ears, the airbag exploded in her face, and the steering wheel crushed into her abdominal. In a matter of seconds she lost consciousness. The ambulance rushed to the scene and helped her out of the car. While on the way to the hospital, Merced quickly got into a horrible condition. Her body started slowing down all of her functions. Her breathing stayed irregular and eventually she stopped breathing.
When Jeremiah found out his mom got into a fatal car accident he felt terribly vulnerable. While he was out having a great time with his friends, his mom was living her last moments in pain and suffering. He could just imagine what her last thoughts were before dying. She died in the worst possible circumstance. After being told that the culprit for the accident was a drunk driver, Jeremiah noticed the irony much too soon that it hit him like a ton of bricks. He had a gut-wrenching feeling, felt as if his heart dropped, and guilt took over his body. He couldn’t help but to regretfully remember the last words he ever told her.  His mom’s death opened his eyes. He knew he had to change his life around.
Unwillingly realizing he could have easily been the one to cause the accident, knowing that he could have killed someone’s mother, sister, girlfriend, wife, daughter, or any individual, was too much to bare. This brought him to a complete epiphany.
As he slowly opens his eyes on his graduation day, he
wishes he had given her credit for helping him shape the man he is now today.  He realizes it wasn’t that he was being misjudged or controlled by his mom; he just lacked life involvements to recognize his bad choices. Currently, he understands that his mom wanted to protect him. Occasionally the complications of a single parent go unrecognized and without gratefulness. He looks back in admiration and recognizes all the things his mom went through. She would never buy things for herself before she took care of him. She taught him how to tie his shoe, ride a bike, reminded him to brush his teeth, helped him complete his homework, and she would read him countless bedtime stories as a child. It was her simple actions that will always be remembered. Her role as a mother and father was challenging and he could only wish she was still alive to say sorry and to thank her for all of her unconditional love. A father in his life wasn’t necessary. He will always cherish her for being his first love, friend, even his first enemy. But neither time nor space will ever separate him from his mother not even death. Although she isn’t physically sitting down with the rest of the students’ families and friends, he knows she is there in spirit, and will continue to be there to help him stay the man he was intended to be.
